Kommentare/ Inhalte: Goal of the seminar is to gain understanding how georisks occur and how they can be assessed using quantitative methods. The focus is on hydro-meteorological extremes, including windstorm, coastal and river flooding. The basic components of hazard, exposure and vulnerability can be assessed using different models and geospatial datasets. Risk can be expressed in quantitative metrics, such as economic and health effects. Depending on the purpose, different methods for risk assessment and modelling can be chosen. Purposes are decision-making on investments for risk reduction, insurance pricing, or early warning and impact forecasting for disaster response. Assignments can focus on either one of the components of georisks, or methods to estimate different outcomes (health, damages, environmental and ecologic effects), risks at different scales (global, national, local), or on interventions to reduce risk. Such interventions can target one or all components of risk. Finally, frameworks for evaluation of risk management interventions, such as cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness, and multi-criteria analysis can be studied.
