The earth’s climate has experienced unusual warming over the past century. The global temperature increased by 0.85°C during the period of 1880-2012. (IPCC, 2013). As per model results the temperature is expected to rise in this century. It has led to a recession of mountain glaciers and ice sheets across the globe. Further, there are regional variations in cryosphere response to regional climate changes. The permafrost and glacial forefields have also experienced changes such as slope failures, GLOFs etc. This course discusses the evolution of the global cryosphere, glaciers, permafrost, glacial lakes and associated hazard potential in relation to climate change

Course 4: Climate change and global cryosphere
Session 1: Definitions and importance: Global climate change, glacial and interglacial periods, cryosphere, climate change and cryosphere inter-linkages
Session 2: Snow cover and glaciers, inter-relationships, distribution, and dynamics
Session 3: Glacier geometry, glacier formation, types, distribution.
Session 4: Glacial movements and related physical processes, Glacial geomorphology and evolution of landscapes
Session 5: Erosional features/landscapes
Session 6: Depositional features/landscapes
Session 7: Dynamics of glaciers: climate change and glaciers, accumulation, ablation, ELA, AAR, state of mountains glacier fluctuations- retreat, advancement, surging with suitable examples, regional behaviors.
Session 8: Mass Balance of glaciers: mass and volume, concepts and methods
Session 9: Permafrost: concepts, distribution, observations
Session 10: Glacial lakes: formations and related factors, types of glacial lakes, distribution of glacial lakes, GLOFs
Session 11-12: Climate change, glaciers, geo-hazards: process of mass-movements (slope failures), hazards potentials
Session 13: Climate change, glaciers, geo-hazards: Lake Outburst floods, hazards potentials
