Target group:
The seminar in the format of COIL webinars is addressed to all educators (teacher educators, inservice teachers, and preservice teachers in Germany and in the United States) who are interested in participating in this online exchange. Furthermore, selected student teachers from the University of Hamburg (UHH) and University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) will have the opportunity to participate in international exchange visits (each 10 days/proportionally funded by UHH).
Description / content:
The seminar is part of a larger collaboration between the University of Hamburg and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The webinar series and exchange visits are designed to enhance international, intercultural, and cross-disciplinary exchanges among teacher educators, inservice teachers, and preservice teachers in Germany and in the United States.
The webinar series contains two parts:
Part I – Intercultural Exchanges (October 2023-January 2024)
Part II – Educational Experiences in Global Settings (February – May 2024)
Part I contains three webinars focusing on intercultural comparison of educational systems as well as intercultural dialogues of teaching and learning from the point of view of the three different cross-cultural and cross-interdisciplinary perspectives (preservice teacher, inservice teacher and teacher educator):
cultural and historical elements influencing the subjects and subject-specific teacher education programs;
subject-specific didactical models, standards, and basic frameworks of high-quality teaching as well as evaluation tools for teaching practice
challenges and resources with a focus on professional dealing with diversity and instructional quality

Participants will
understandings of educational systems in the international contexts;
share personal educational experiences and learn from lived experiences of educators from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds;
explore cross-cultural and interdisciplinary pedagogical concepts and tools that support teaching and learning in diverse settings; and
enhance intercultural competency through dialogues, exchanges, and first-hand or vicarious experiences in intercultural settings.
