Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Innovation is increasingly important as the source of sustainable competitive advantage for firms around the world and for societies to prosper. However, building an organization to successfully and repeatedly bring innovations to the markets is a daunting challenge. In this course, we focus on the practices and processes that managers use to organize innovation. The aim of this course is to provide students with a combination of theoretical and applied knowledge on organizing innovation. The course focuses on both the challenges and opportunities firms face when organizing for innovation and engaging in the creation and commercialization of new products or services. The course examines the challenge to building and maintaining an innovative organization, the role of creativity, and how individuals can successfully innovate in organizations. Students also learn about knowledge transfers between universities and society, social innovation, and open innovation.

Lernziel:
Students in this seminar will learn theoretical basics of organization and innovation, recent topics in innovation management, current trends in business and society, and skills for developing research projects.

Vorgehen:
The seminar is based on selected topics of innovation management. During the first session of the seminar, students will be provided with a brief introduction to the topics and recent trends in business and society as an inspiration for developing their research proposal. Broader topics will be assigned after the first session based on student preferences and topic availability. Depending on the size of the course, students can also work in groups.

Students are expected to craft a seminar paper in the form of a research proposal. The subject of the research proposal is to define a research problem, identify a research gap and appropriate research questions, present the theoretical background / conceptual approach, and outline a methodological approach that is adequate for the research question. After presenting their proposal at the seminar, students will have time to incorporate the feedback and submit their paper.

Literatur:
Several readings are provided for each topic as an entry point for an independent literature research. The literature will be announced at the kick-off session.

Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen:
This seminar is a project seminar (block course) with online elements (feedback sessions). As proof of course participation, students must deliver and receive a passing grade on a paper of approx. 12 pages (2/3 of overall contribution). Students are also required to give a presentation that introduces their research proposal (1/3 of overall contribution). The seminar will be held in English.
