A significant quandary facing the study of Byzantine art is the undeniably problematic term “Byzantine”. Deriving from Byzantium/Byzantion, the small ancient city upon which Constantinople was founded as the new capital of the Roman Empire in the early fourth century, the “Byzantine” nomenclature only began gaining traction in early modern Europe but there has been no escaping this inscrutable term since. At the heart of this seminar is thus the question: what precisely is “Byzantine” about Byzantine art? While offering an introductory overview to the visual culture of and relating to the Eastern Roman Empire, the class will focus on how the “Byzantine” rubric encompasses multiple, sometimes unexpected and incompatible, meanings and thus demands various approaches for its study. The goal of this course is a nuanced understanding of the significance and the constructed legacy of “Byzantine” art within the broader context of medieval art history.

Students should expect weekly readings and a manageable number of assignments, which will be outlined at our first meeting. Readings, instruction, and discussion will be in English. Students eager for the opportunity to enhance their language proficiency will certainly be accommodated.

6 LP: in der Regel Referat und Hausarbeit
Art und Umfang von Prüfungs- bzw. Studienleistungen werden ggf. zu Beginn der Lehrveranstaltung bekannt gegeben.

MASTER
2 LP: in der Regel regelmäßige aktive Teilnahme
5 LP: in der Regel Referat (ca. 20–40 Min).
10 LP: in der Regel Referat (ca. 20–40 Min) und in der Regel Hausarbeit (Umfang ca. 12–15 Seiten, Bearbeitungszeit: ca. 3–7 Wochen).
Art und Umfang von Prüfungs- bzw. Studienleistungen werden ggf. zu Beginn der Lehrveranstaltung bekannt gegeben.
