Kommentare/ Inhalte:
The aim of this course is to explore the history of the concepts of ‘debt’, ‘sin’, ‘remission’, and ‘forgiveness’ in Second Temple Jewish and early Christian texts. After a methodological introduction, the analysis will focus on sources from the Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the New Testament. The cancellation of debts during the sabbatical year (Deut 15:1-2) and the forgiveness of debts in the Lord’s Prayer are examples of the topics that will be covered during the lessons. Particular attention will be given to the semantic connections existing between the notions of 'debt' and 'sin' in Aramaic sources.
The course does not require any particular linguistic skills, although knowledge of at least one ancient language among Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Aramaic is a strong advantage.
