The term "monument" is crucial in Western art history and architectural discourse, referring to structures, sculptures, or memorials that possess historical, cultural, or symbolic significance. Its derivative word "monumentality" describes the quality or characteristic of being monumental, conveying a sense of power, authority, and collective memory. The application of the western concept of "monumentality" to the study of Chinese art history can be attributed to Wu Hung, who published a monograph Monumentality in Early Chinese Art and Architecture in 1996 based on his teaching at Harvard University. This book reinterprets Chinese decorative, pictorial, and architectural forms from prehistory to the early sixth century as monuments to evolve the notion of monumentality within a Chinese context. However, the book sparked an intense debate between Western and Chinese art historians in the years that followed, which was described as "a Kosovo war in the academic field." (Li Ling, 2000) In the debate, disagreements focused on whether "meaning" existed in ancient Chinese art forms, how to use archaeological materials and ancient literature in art history studies, as well as how to define "Chineseness". They reflect the tension between the new art history method based on transcultural, interdisciplinary perspectives and conventional formalist approaches. This seminar will start with, but not be limited to, a review of this academic debate. More importantly, the discussion will extend beyond early Chinese art and architecture to all forms of visual expression, ranging from ancient traditions to modern and contemporary practices. In particular, the seminar will scrutinize monuments erected from the turn of the 20th century to the present, as well as the depiction of memorial images in artworks and films. It also intends to explore the theme of political iconography in Chinese visual culture.
