This seminar will be held in English language as a block seminar.
Since the 1980s, in the field of contemporary art, there has been a growing interest in critical and creative processes from Africa and its diasporas. Artists working globally today operate in a growing market. In the context of this globalization, contemporary artists from Africa are represented internationally by galleries and their work is increasingly the subject of exhibitions and biennials. The continent is seeing a bmoou`ing of cultural and artistic creativity and the construction of new museums and dedicated art spaces. At the same time, in an increasingly tense geopolitical context, cultural diplomacy remains an essential lever for nations, and institutions such as museums, both in Africa and in Europe, to join forces in order to promote artistic and curatorial processes and practices.
Furthermore, in the context of the repatriation of African traditional objects, this course will present the place and composition of the vibrant contemporary art industry in Africa and the state of curatorial practice based in this context. We will identify particularly dynamic areas and structures. In order to do so the course will revolve around one case study: the collective pan-African exhibition ‘Memoria: re´cits d’une autre Histoire / Memoria: Accounts of Another History’, initially conceived in 2021, Bordeaux, France, as part of the Africa2020 cultural season, followed by editions in Abidjan, Ivory Coast (2022), and Yaounde, Cameroon (2023).
In a last step, students will be able to critically question the state of African artists and their artistic production in the global curatorial context, by considering the place of monographic versus collective exhibitions and the necessity or not of assigning artists to specific geographical spheres.

Nadine Hounkpatin is a curator and producer of artistic and cultural projects. She designs and develops projects related to the artistic and cultural scenes of Africa and its diasporas, on the continent and in the rest of the world, with the firm conviction that the development of societies passes through cultural and artistic education established from the earliest age. She is particularly interested in new themes emerging in society, and art as activism that seeks to motivate change or comment on emerging social and political trends.
Since 2020, she has made visible the work of around forty women artists through traveling exhibitions on the African continent, enriched with original mediation programs. Nadine is also co-founder and editor of the print and digital platform TheArtMomentum.com, dedicated to the artistic and critical voices from Africa and its diasporas. Through these diverse activities, Nadine takes part in the promotion of new voices and thinking coming from the African continent.
