Kommentare/ Inhalte: Content This seminar is intended to provide both a critical examination of common school and learning structures and a model for transforming teaching and learning to center equity, justice and belonging. A focus in the course will be on engaging students in experiential and community-based learning that reflects the theoretical constructs of critical approaches to teaching and learning. Together we will explore different pedagogical structures that fall under the broader categories of progressive and critical pedagogies. In particular, we will home in on anti-oppressive, transformative models of teaching that disrupt traditional educational structures and open up possibilities for shifting the boundaries—and outcomes-- of teaching and learning.
Lernziel: Educational Objectives Students will: critique traditional teaching and learning structures and models so as to consider their benefits and constraints; consider who is best/least served by traditional teaching and learning models; examine theoretical foundations of particular critical and progressive pedagogies, including community/place-based pedagogy; arts-based pedagogy, experiential pedagogy and anti-oppressive pedagogies; explore and identify models of teachers and community practitioners engaged in critical and experiential teaching and learning that reflects equity, justice and belonging; innovate with different sorts of progressive and justice-oriented teaching approaches and consider the use of 21stcentury tools in support of teaching and learning; reflect on their own experience as they engage in somatic experiential learning as part of the course experience; consider the enactment of critical and experiential education within their identified field and anticipate implications for their future work.
Vorgehen: Procedures In the course, students will be expected to be active and engaged participants. The course will move into and beyond the theoretical to examine what critical and experiential education practices look like in a variety of settings. The course will include students engaged outside of the classroom space as they practice progressive models of teaching and learning. Part of the course will include students leading class wide experiential activities and follow up reflection. Students will be introduced to and practice a variety of strategies that facilitate reflection including open narrative, graphic, and critical incident reflections. The first four sessions of the course in April will be held on zoom. Face-to-face sessions will begin the first week of May. The zoom link and additional information will be sent to students closer to the beginning of the semester.
