1898 was the year of the beginning and end of the Spanish-American War. What started as support for the self-determination in Spanish colonies, brought the Philippines, but also Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guam, under American administration. The seminar will discuss the global dimension and the aftermath of the war, with a focus on how those events were represented in Europe and are remembered in the Philippines.
The seminar will be organized in two parts, the first three meetings will present the historical background and the unfolding of the war, then the rest of the semester will be organized as a series of workshops (three workshops, each composed of three meetings) where students will work on the following themes.
How these events were perceived and echoed in European countries, which were themselves centers of other empires (France, Germany, Portugal, the UK, and The Netherlands).
What was the impact of the American presence on the social and political life in the Philippines? For example, in which way the following American-Filipino war and the American administration disrupted life in the Muslim Southern region?
What was the consequence of violence, and physical destruction, on the cultural memory in the affected region?
The workshops will serve as preparation for an exhibition at the university of Hamburg, students will therefore be encouraged to think critically and creatively to present history to a larger public.
No prerequisite but willingness to work collectively, in small groups, is necessary.

Biodata: Elsa Clavé is assistant professor in Austronesian studies. She specialized in the social and cultural history of the Malay speaking world, in particular the Philippines, Sumatra and the Malay peninsula. Her research revolves around the relation between history and memory, as well as the production and the circulation of knowledge.
