Kommentare/ Inhalte: The seminar retraces the historical contacts, cultural exchanges, and social dynamics, which linked the Indochinese peninsula to the Malay-speaking world, mainly through the circulation of Islam. We will look at this world religion through its regional dynamics – oral stories, places of worship, manuscript cultures – and actors – learned men travelling from on land to another, local ulama, ministers, or kings. The seminar will cover a vast period, from the 16th to the early 20th century, and highlights the contemporary situation on the newly-formed nation-States. While Islam is the religion of the majority in Malaysia and Indonesia, Muslims are minorities in present-day Vietnam and Cambodia. Nowadays, Islam is less about circulation and exchange, and more about control and influence. The last part of the seminar will address those themes in national and transnational contexts.

The seminar is open to advance BA students as well as MA ones.
No prerequisite required, except a good command of English (reading). Assignments can be written in German or English

Biodata: Elsa Clavé is assistant professor in Austronesian studies. She specialized in the social and cultural history of the Malay speaking world, in particular the history of Islam and Muslim societies in the Philippines, Sumatra and the Malay peninsula. Her research revolves around the relation between history and memory, as well as the production and the circulation of knowledge.

 
Lernziel: Objectives:
The seminar aims at introducing students to the region with the largest Muslim population in the world and to gain deep historical knowledge on the way Islam was adopted and is lived among different societies in Southeast Asia. At the end of the semester, students should be able to:

  • Discuss about the social and cultural significance of Islam in several Southeast Asian countries
  • Look at global phenomenon such a conversion, trade, education, in a transregional perspective
  • Look at the historiography of Islam in Southeast Asia in an informed and a critical way
