Kommentare/ Inhalte: Thailand’s foreign policy is frequently characterised as akin to bamboo bending with the wind. The metaphor implies flexibility and pragmatism, or even opportunism, with independence and national interests as its basis. Since the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Thailand has been recognized for its shrewd diplomacy that skillfully balanced one great power or a number of powers vis-à-vis the others, which enabled the country to maintain its independence even in the age of imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Now that the PR China is extending its influence in the region, and with the United States gradually withdrawing from Southeast Asia, Thailand confronts a critical juncture in global politics. This seminar looks at the traditions and genealogy of Thailand’s international relations, from the Ayutthaya period to the present. The seminar is meant for students interested in Thai history, politics, and international relations. Students from other sections of the AAI are also welcome to attend. Essay & oral presentation are mandatory for credit points.
