This course provides students with an overview of the theories, techniques and strategies behind, and practical guidance on, the design and implementation of MA-level research projects. The course is designed to enable students to develop the skills necessary to identify promising research questions, develop an appropriate research design, and write their future MA theses in a well-written and well-argued manner. As a practice-oriented course, we will spend time discussing students' research interests and writing samples. Class meetings will often be divided into (1) critical and in-depth discussion of the week's readings, (2) break-out groups to discuss practical steps in developing a research design, and/or (3) student presentations on research areas. Class work will be divided into on-site class discussions with (some) student presentations, individual and small group consultations, and off-site small group discussions. The course does not provide an overview of individual research methods, but complements other methods courses by providing a structured overview of standards of good research practice in the social sciences. Primarily based in the field of qualitative, case-oriented empirical research, the course also allows students to enrich their knowledge of how to design research projects with a purely theoretical focus or those with a quantitative research orientation. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify 'puzzles' and research problems in their chosen area of research, will have had an introduction to different research designs in the social sciences, and will have developed an understanding of the challenges of theorising in the social sciences and issues of research ethics that are also applicable to their own research projects.
