Kommentare/ Inhalte: The seminar introduces students to the field of the archaeology of the book, providing them with the necessary background to comprehend how manuscripts were made and to distinguish the various types of their structures (including bindings) developed through history. The course mainly focuses on the codex form, but encourages a cross- cultural approach by comparing the structures preferred in different areas. Descriptions of other types of book forms will also be discussed. Students are encouraged to bring the type of manuscripts they work on, in order to tailor the lessons to the structures that are most interesting to them. The seminar will offer a combination of lectures introducing the typologies, and hands-on sessions focused on practical demonstrations, observation of the structures of original books and manuscripts (in cooperation with the CSMC Library and the SUB) and reproduction of specific structures.
