Kommentare/ Inhalte: This lecture series gives a broad overview of basic physical oceanography: geomorphology of the sea floor, the physical (and chemical) properties of seawater and ice, external forcing (heat, freshwater and momentum including tides), basic hydrodynamics (Navier-Stokes Equations and relevant approximations: geostrophy, hydrostatics, thermal wind), surface mixed layer dynamics, wind-driven circulation (upwelling, westward intensification), stratification and thermohaline circulation, waves (surface and internal gravity waves, barotropic an baroclinic Rossby waves), as well as fronts and current instabilities.
