Kommentare/ Inhalte: There is an increased awareness in the informatics community of the need for designing and creating socially responsible and ethical software and algorithms. The heightened awareness is, in part, a response to the negative publicity to the discipline due to numerous questionable and dubious algorithms in academic research or even in the public/commercial domains in recent years. However, while the need to account for the wider impacts of software, algorithms and digital technologies more generally is sufficiently clear, it is not the case for how informatics researchers, computer engineers, and technologists can (and should) think through the social, ethical, and political issues in and of their work. This course introduces the basics of ethics assessment for informatics. More specifically, the (virtual) workshop-based course includes different scenarios in the design and development of software, algorithms, and digital technologies to illustrate what criteria are used in accounting for the broader impacts and how we can identify and/or anticipate the social, ethical, and political problems related to digital technologies, thereby minimizing them.
Lernziel: Students (i) will be acquainted with the basics of ethics assessment in informatics; (ii) will acquire hands-on experience in ethics assessment; (iii) will demonstrate proficiency in ethical thinking.
Literatur: Reading list will be announced at the first lecture.
