Kommentare/ Inhalte: Beginn: 24.10.22 Unterrichtssprache: Englisch In some contexts during the Hellenistic period, sculpture continued in a late Classical style reflecting the unchanged needs of some sectors of Hellenistic society. Rather, the innovations of Hellenistic sculpture consisted in a great expansion of the existing repertoire, both in terms of quantity and expression. More statues were made, more subjects represented, and a greater variety of styles utilised. Sculptors were responding to the new demands of a society whose horizons had been greatly expanded by the conquest of Alexander the Great. A great period of Greek and Macedonian colonisation followed, and the society that emerged in the new cities of the Hellenistic East was more cosmopolitan, culturally and socially complex. The aim of this lecture is to introduce Hellenistic Sculpture and approach the contexts and backgrounds from the period of Alexander the Great until the Romans were in full control of the Mediterranean towards the end of the 1st c. BC.
Lernziel: Basic knowledge on Hellenistic Sculpture.
