Kommentare/ Inhalte: While the world in general and SE-Asia in particular are rapidly urbanising since mid-20th century, the meaning of sustainable cities with respective transport systems are increasingly important. However, what does sustainability mean in terms of urban transport, and how does this translate into SE-Asia’s metropolitan areas? Which environmental, social, and economic dimensions are relevant here, how can we assess them, and what does sustainability require from policies, politics, and governments?

In this seminar we will approach these questions by defining sustainable urban transport in general, before assessing and comparing policy approaches, transport-developments, and evolving transport systems of different metropolitan areas in SE-Asia against this background. This comparative approach will highlight the pros and cons of different approaches as pursued in cities across Asia.

The lecturer will contact the students via their UHH E-mail prior to the start of this lecture.
The lectures will be delivered in English, but the students may respond and ask questions in German. The student is required to actively participate in the lectures and prepare the readings to be discussed in class. In general, these readings are analytical articles about the topic of the week. The student is required to present a topic in the module assigned to him or her in the beginning of the semester and write an essay on it. The student shall participate in the seminar-evaluations.

Biodata:
In research, consultancy and cultural tourism Matthias Mueth has worked in Southeast Asia over the past 25 years. In the Philippines he has studied disaster-management and published on the aftermath of the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo volcano. In Singapore and Bangkok he researched the making of transport policies for his PhD in political science, returning to Thailand as a consultant for regulatory regimes in urban transport.
Lernziel: Lernziele/Objectives:

  • Further developing capacities for analysis, reflection, establishing thesis and defending them
  • Understanding methodological approaches for comparing transport modes and their implications for social, environmental, economic, and political aspects
  • Training research and presentation-skills
  • Understanding interdependencies of urban form, densities, urban transport, and historical developments
  • Understanding core aspects of sustainability in urban transport

Vorgehen:

  • General understanding of the interrelationships of urban transport with urban structure, the economy, environment, and social aspects
  • Introduction of major aspects and interdependencies, which shape the transport-systems of cities
  • Defining aspects of sustainability in the field of urban transport
  • Identifying core-policies shaping transport systems combined with a comparative analysis
  • Knowledge of the unique geographical, historical and political situation of metropolitan areas in SE-Asia
  • Familiarity with the overarching transport policies implemented in Singapore in comparison to Bangkok, Jakarta, HCMC, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila
