Kommentare/ Inhalte: We will look at important Western paradigms in studying traditional and modern China, such as the geographical approach (Ji Chaoding, William G. Skinner), the Needham question (still a popular topic in Chinese language history of science), environmental history (a relatively new topic), ethnicity (including new Qing history), discussions about China/Western Europe developmental divergence (Pomeranz as well as Peer Vries), and so on. The class will be taught in English. Since this course depends entirely on classroom participation, it is expected that the participants have read the required materials before class and can discuss it ad lib.
