Kommentare/ Inhalte:
How should a just society distribute the benefits and burdens of social cooperation? Do individuals have duties of distributive justice? Do duties duties of distributive justice apply globally? In this seminar, we will address these and other related questions by discussing the main contemporary approaches to distributive justice in political philosophy. This seminar is divided into four blocks: in the first block, we will address the question of the metric of distributive justice: what aspect(s) of a person’s condition should count in a fundamental way and therefore be the object of distribution? For instance, should a just society provide persons with an equal amount of resources, or opportunities, or welfare? In the second block, we will examine the question of the pattern of distributive justice, namely: how should a relevant good – e.g. resources – be distributed? Is it important that everyone has an equal amount of resources, or what matters is that everyone has enough resources? In the third block, we will discuss the question of the site of distributive justice: do principles of distributive justice only apply to a society’s major social institutions, or should they also regulate individuals’ own personal choices? Finally, we will address the question of the scope of distributive justice: do citizens have any duties of distributive justice towards foreigners? If yes, do citizens have responsibilities of distributive justice to each other that they do not have to foreigners?
