Kommentare/ Inhalte: PLEASE NOTE: This lecture will be held online! Prof. van der Putten will write to all students via their Uni Hamburg e-mail address on how to proceed. This module is a continuation of the one of the previous semester. Students who have followed and passed the written exam of the previous semester are invited to register for the class in which we will be studying hand-written Malay texts in Arabic script in manuscript form from an online digital repository. The text will be decided upon after deliberation about the preferred topic of the text. Besides transcribing the text and understanding it, we will also discuss the basic elements of philology and codicology. The module is available for BA and MA students who have passed the module Classical Malay 1 or have followed a similar module elsewhere. Advanced proficiency in Indonesian or Malaysian is necessary to follow this class. Biodata: Jan van der Putten is Professor Austronesistik in the Department of Southeast Asia (Asien-Afrika-Institut) at the University of Hamburg where he teaches on Southeast Asian literatures and cultures. Traditional Malay writings is one of his main research projects affiliated with the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) in Hamburg. In general, his research explores the meaning of traditional and popular Malay texts and their distribution among peoples and exchange between cultures.
