Nanoscience major: This course is dedicated to nanoscience bachelor students of 6th semester and nanoscience master students.

Kommentare/ Inhalte:
The course is divided into three parts:
I) synthesis 0-, 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional building blocks with a length scale
from nm to µm. Incl. practical aspects of batch and flow chemistry.
II) assembly of building blocks into 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional complex structures, over several length scales up to cm.
In part I, various methodologies for the synthesis of the inorganic and polymeric building blocks will be discussed.
Part II is focused on self- and directed assembly methods, dispersion-based coating, 2D- and 3D-printing ink printing that can be used to create higher order architectures from those building blocks connecting the microscopic with the macroscopic world and their applications.
Part III is focused on application of the learned concepts to a problem of modern functional materials. This will include implementation of the own ideas in the lab.

Lernziel:
In this course the students will gain theoretical background and hands-on experience with complex materials.
The objectives are:
a) to learn how to design and fabricate objects as building blocks with a particular shape and a defined recognition pattern,
b) to understand the chemistry that allows for the creation of such hard and soft objects within a certain size range,
c) to master the concepts to assemble these objects into hierarchically structured, functional materials.
d) solution oriented application of the gained knowledge to the current challenges in nanotechnology.

All assessment tests and/or presentations must be completed and turned in regularly during semester.
Full participation in the project part is required. The final report incl. written project idea (individually) and a short video of a practical implementation (1 per group) in the lab.
Additionally, brief essay must be turned in.
