Digital media technologies and mobile communication technologies (Internet, social networks, online games, etc.) are extremely widespread worldwide and have become an integral part of many people's lives. This creates exciting new challenges for social and cultural anthropology. What does it mean to be human in an increasingly digitized world? How do you live and interact in digital worlds? How can terms of digitality, reality and virtuality be meaningfully understood from an anthropological perspective? How do technical aids and virtual spaces influence social coexistence (e.g. communication and gaming)? How can these and many other questions be described methodically, ethnographically and explained anthropologically? Such questions have been and are being investigated in a new research field that can be understood as digital anthropology (other titles are cyberanthropology, virtual anthropology, etc).

In this seminar we will investigate these new challenges and fields of work for anthropology in the digital age. This will be a first approach to jointly identified core areas (e.g. people and technology, social media, people and digital games, digitality and power) - which should be deepened in a follow-up seminar. We will discuss various theoretical texts, work on ethnographic case studies from the areas of the Internet, social networks, online games, smartphones and discuss various methodological approaches. At the same time, we aim to critically reflect on the possible roles of anthropology in the context of the digital age.

Lernziel:
The students should get to know theoretical debates around digital anthropology and learn to classify them in terms of their history. They will will get to know the problems and opportunities of the anthropological investigation of various digital contexts. In addition, they will deal with methodological approaches to access research topics. The aim of the seminar is to use case studies and examples to present the students with the challenge of developing a topic and to scientifically process the results.

The target group of the seminar are motivated students in the advanced phase with very good knowledge of scientific work techniques (preparation of lectures, writing of scientific term papers, research). Proof of achievement requires: Regular, punctual and committed participation; compliance with all deadlines; extensive reading and source research; presentation of results in the form of a lecture; moderation of discussions; house work.

Vorgehen:
In the first part of the seminar, we will first work on an overview of the phenomenon by studying the sources and jointly looking through the digital material. Based on this step we will develop common basic knowledge of core areas. At the same time, questions are being developed independently and in working groups and in-depth source-/ literature research is carried out, which leads to the development of one's own results (presentation, term paper. In the main block of the seminar, the seminar participants present results in short lectures and moderate discussions. The seminar will be a combination of discussions, presentations and group work.

Literatur:
There will be an AGORA room. Mandatory literature for the first sessions will be announced in advance. Participation may require additional independent research into literature.
