Kommentare/ Inhalte: How do geopolitics shape individual biographies? How do borders impede people’s movement? How do borders provide resourceful differentials to be used by those living in their proximity? Social anthropological research at the eastern “margins” of the European Union and in Russia, Turkey, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus' can offer valuable insights into the workings of borders, blocs, empires, work, migration, diaspora and minority status, interlaced in biographies and collectively held sensibilities. The seminar will start with a short perusal of anthropological key concepts (b/ordering, nation states and empires), then delve into case studies from different border configurations, and subsequently broach the issue of populism and hopes for the future. In the final part, we will revisit the concept of b/orders and ask to what extent they hold heuristic value when it comes to analysing livelihoods and aspirations in a region increasingly shaped by conflict.
Vorgehen: For 3 LP (3 credit points): weekly readings; regular and active participation in the seminar’s sessions; individually or collectively prepared presentation in one of the sessions. For 5 LP (5 credit points): in addition to the above, a written essay of 15-20 pages, to be submitted by 4 August 2022. Osteuropastudien and ECTS requirements: please contact the lecturer.
