Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Traditional and dualistic perspectives on state-society relations and political rule see the state as the primary producer of order and leading governing authority, whereas the society is the recipient of the state's actions. The state is equated with order and, consequently, state absence/weakness is conceived as tantamount to disorder and 'governance voids'. However, a large bulk of research, particularly on Africa, Latin America, and Asia, has demonstrated that the state-centric approach is not consistent with the experience of most societies across time and space. There is plenty of multiplicity and diversity in governance arrangements at the national and sub-national levels, and a state-centric perspective conceals such richness and variety. Throughout this seminar, we will examine theoretical debates and empirical analyses to get a more complex and nuanced understanding of the workings of governance, state-society relations, and conflict. Students will be invited to address and think critically about how order and governance are defined and addressed and about the politics of order-making. While aimed towards political science students, the seminar brings together insights from a multidisciplinary approach.
Lernziel:
The seminar offers an introduction to the burgeoning literature on order, governance, and conflict. Specifically, students will understand the current conceptual and theoretical debates on these themes. In this course, students will explore empirical analyses about the manifold configurations of actors and governance dynamics. Upon successful completion of this seminar, students will be better able to demonstrate command of the literature on governance, political rule, and state-society relations and critically analyze the politics of governance and order-making from an approach sensitive to contextual factors.
Vorgehen:
The seminar addresses undergraduate students in social sciences. The work in the seminar will be based on presentations, written commentaries, forums, and readings. The required texts will be available in Stine. All the materials, including multimedia resources, will be available on the Openolat platform.
