Target group:
Students in the foundation studies of the BA programme.
Max. no. of participants: 20

Prerequisites:
Students must have an intermediate level of English - Level B1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).
Students must be prepared to participate actively and also, where required, to work as part of a team.
Interdisciplinary openness and cooperation are expected of all students who wish to participate in this course.
Lernziel: Oral Communication:
Practising the language necessary to communicate effectively in English;
Reducing inhibitions regarding communicating in a foreign language;
Improving fluency of speech;
Improving presentation skills.

Reading and Writing:
Students should become accustomed to reading, analysing and discussing texts in their chosen field of study in English.
They should also practise their writing skills in a subject-specific context in English and according to scientific and academic standards.

– All of the above within a study-related context.
Vorgehen: Reading
Texts on topics chosen by students related to their field of study will be read, analysed and discussed.
Students will be expected to compile a vocabulary list on the texts chosen to be made available to the rest of the class in advance.
Students will be expected to prepare discussion tasks on the individual texts examined in advance of the session in question.

Oral Communication
All students will give a presentation (either individually or as part of a group) followed by a moderated question-and-answer and discussion session on a topic related to:                                                     

1)     their IGK or 2) one of their ‘Grundkurse’ or 3) a socioeconomic topic of their choice.

Students will be expected to prepare a vocabulary list to be distributed before the presentation.
Tasks should be prepared in advance for the discussion which is to follow the presentation.
Constructive feedback will be given on the students’ presentation skills

Writing
Students will be expected to write an essay on the topic of their presentation. The text should be 1000-1500 words long (not including references). Constructive feedback will also be given on the students’ written work.
Literatur: Documents selected and/or prepared by lecturer and/or students, posted on MS Teams.
Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen: Regular and active participation assessed on a continuous basis.
Presentation on a topic related to one's studies and a written elaboration in the form of a short essay thereon.
Accompanying material to the presentation and reading text (on a topic related to one's studies): vocabulary lists and discussion tasks.
