Philological analysis is an important part of any historical study of manuscript traditions and manuscript cultures. Many of these medieval traditions were multilingual, as most works that had a relevance in medieval times were translated into several languages at different points in their dissemination history.
Multilingual traditions pose specific methodological problems from a text critical point of view. These issues are very rarely addressed in manuals of textual criticism and editorial techniques (see the recent Handbook of Stemmatology, ed. by Philipp Roelli et al., Berlin: De Gruyter, 2020). When comparing (or collating) the same work in different languages, how exactly should this comparison be performed? What kind of differences / similarities are significant and kinship-revealing? How to find and determine them? How to interpret these differences / similarities in text critical terms? How is it possible to define the type of relationship between different versions of the same work? From an editorial point of view how should a multilingual edition look like to be useful even for readers who do not know all the languages in question? How can this multilingual philological analysis contribute to a global history of the manuscript traditions and manuscripts cultures involved, integrating codicological, palaeographical and material aspects?
In this series of seminars we want to address exactly this type of questions on the basis of different applied case studies. The lectures are intended for both graduate and undergraduate students interested in ancient and medieval literatures and manuscripts. No previous knowledge of any language is required, the seminars will be made accessible to all.
