Kommentare/ Inhalte:
As global migration processes pose challenges to modern democracies, critical normative questions about the nature of democracy, boundaries of political membership, and legitimacy of borders emerge. In this seminar, we will discuss these normative questions on migration and citizenship within political theory. In the first part, we will deal with the questions that focus on immigration: Should there be a right to immigrate? Should states have the right to exclude potential migrants from entering? Are borders discriminatory or racist? What constitutes a refugee? In the second part, we will turn to questions of migration for political membership and citizenship: Should citizenship be mandatory for migrants? Can denationalization be justified? Should citizenship be up for sale?

Students will be able to:
- explain and compare key concepts in normative political theory
- reconstruct, analyze, and interpret texts in political theory
- evaluate and criticize arguments
- formulate relevant research questions
- research, select and critically discuss the relevant literature in political theory
- develop and defend arguments
Vorgehen:
This is a discussion-based seminar. Preparation of all assigned readings with the upload of one statement or question per session to the platform OpenOlat and active participation in class discussion are expected from the students.
The seminar follows the principles of research-based learning. For most sessions, one or more students will write a position paper (1000 words), often providing opposing positions, that respond to the readings assigned for that week and makes a persuasive and clear argument regarding one of the issues raised by the text(s). These papers will be uploaded before the sessions (at least 24 hours before) on the platform OpenOlat and presented briefly in the class. The authors of the position papers are expected to take a leading role in our discussion for that week.
Depending on the situation, the class might take in presence. Further information on that will be given once it is determined.

A detailed list of readings will be distributed in the first session. This seminar does not presuppose prior knowledge on political theory/philosophy. However, if you want to prepare and introduce yourself to political theory in general, you could read the following book and listen to the following podcast:

To be admitted to the final exam, students are required to complete the following coursework: weekly preparation of texts, with the upload of one statement or question per session to OpenOlat, active participation in seminar discussion, position paper (see Vorgehen), presentation, and defense of position paper in class.

The mark for the position paper can upgrade the mark for the term paper (conditional on pass) by a maximum of 0.7. Even though the seminar language is English (including position and term papers), advanced English skills are not required. The goal of the seminar is also to improve your English and encourage you to use these skills.
