Alle Studierende (auch Studienanfänger/innen) mit dem Hauptfach oder Nebenfach SOA melden sich nur zum Seminar "S: Landeskunde Südostasiens"  im Rahmen des u.a. Moduls an. Sie besuchen aber eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung, die aus Vorlesung+Seminar bestehen.Sie müssen beide besuchen.

Die Veranstaltung "Landeskunde Südostasiens" ist eine Pflichtveranstaltung
- im Modul SOA-E4 für Hauptfach-Studierenden bzw.
- im Modul SOA-E4-NF für Nebenfach-Studierenden.


5 Plätze für übrige Studierende über den Curricularbereich „Studium Generale“ stehen zur Verfügung.

Southeast Asia, a region that extends from eastern India to China, is characterized by a large variety of landscapes and people living according to different beliefs and cultures. The course forms an introduction to this diversity. It presents, in the first place, the main geographical features of the region, the spoken languages, and a broad chronology, which punctuates the region’s history with a particular focus on the formation of major Southeast Asian cultural centers.

Within this frame, the course introduces then to the principal beliefs and religions practiced in the region, as well as to their artistic expression, emphasizing in which way these cultural features can help to understand the way people lived in the past societies and continue to do so nowadays.
By learning about the history, religion, but also performing arts, language, and literature, students are invited to think about Southeast Asia as a region sharing features but remaining culturally complex, hence forming an idea of Southeast Asia beyond commonplace perspectives and generalizations, gaining the skills to think in critical and informed ways.

Designed for first semester students, the course requires no previous knowledge about Southeast Asia but curiosity and regular short readings to engage in class discussion.
The language of instruction is English, term paper and assignments can be written either in German or English.

Biodata:
Elsa Clavé is junior professor in Austronesistik and specialized in cultural and social history of insular Southeast Asia, namely Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
Lernziel: This course is designed for students to:

- gain basic knowledge on the physical characteristics of the region
- be able to map groups of people and spoken languages in Southeast Asia
- understand the cultural dynamics implied by contacts within Southeast Asia and with the outside.
- get familiar with the literary and artistic expressions of Southeast Asia
- gain a progressive habit of reading and understanding academic texts
