Kommentare/ Inhalte: This course aims to provide students of American literature and culture with answers to the most important questions that they face at the very beginning of their studies. More specifically, it serves as an introduction to the core concepts, terms, and practices needed for the study of literature and culture. Toward this end, over the course of the semester students will acquire the basic skills of reading, analyzing and discussing various textual genres ranging from poetry to prose, but also including drama and film. What is more, in conjunction with the accompanying lecture by Prof. Rohr, the course focuses on different epochs of American literary and cultural history. Throughout, the overall objective is to empower students to engage with U.S. American texts and media from a scholarly perspective. The course is part of an introductory module consisting of the lecture course “History of American Literature” given by Prof. Rohr as well as an obligatory tutorial taught by Nazan Demirci or Anne Grigoleit. Important note: Students missing the first session without a prior, written excuse of their absence will be taken off the list of registered students! Course Requirements: For full course credit, students are required to attend regularly and actively, participate in the seminar and accompanying tutorial, write a short reading response (c. 150 words) each week, and submit both a mid-term and a final paper.
