This lecture will take place via Zoom. The lecturer will advise the access data via your @studium.uni-hamburg.de Email. A room in agora will then be opened.

The course requires no previous knowledge of the Filipino. An additional group may be formed for the grammar if several students with a beginner/intermediate level enroll.
The language of instruction is English.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7 000 islands, where the population is in majority Christian and speak Filipino as national language. But it is also an archipelago where some places are richer and more developed than others; a country with many ethnic and linguistic groups speaking around 150 languages; and a place where religious communities are numerous, even when named ‘Christians’. The seminar will provide an introduction to the language, culture and society of the Philippines, balancing between national and regional examples and perspectives.

It will be organized around three interrelated components:

Language, with an emphasis on grammar and on the relation between Filipino (Tagalog) and other Austronesian languages.
Literature and arts, with a study of a few texts in English and an introduction to different genres, both written and performed
History, with an overview of the country’s history and its relation with Southeast and East Asia

Biodata:
Elsa Clavé is junior professor in Austronesistik and specialized in cultural and social history of insular Southeast Asia, namely Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
Elisabeth Luquin is an anthropologist and speaks fluently Filipino, Mangyan (Mindoro) and Cebuano. She is the head of the department of Philippine Studies at the Inalco, France.

Lernziel: This course is designed for students to:

- complete a beginner level in Filipino
- gain basic knowledge on the history and societies of the country
- get familiar with a few forms of the literary and artistic expressions of the Philippines
- gain a progressive habit of reading and understanding academic texts

Literatur: A complete bibliography will be provided to students enrolled through STINE before the start of the semester.
