1. Content

This course is a case study in Intercultural Communication. The aim is for the participants to understand culture as an organic entity, in which underlying values, beliefs and basic assumptions generate both the behaviors of a group of people, and the structures of the society they create for themselves. A secondary aim is for participants to become of aware of differences between Finnish culture and their own.

Topics include:

1. A brief overview of history as collective memory, i.e. how do Finns see their history and how does that history live on, both in modern day Finland, and in the Finnish mindset?
2. The central values at the heart of Finnish culture. What are they, and how did the come into existence?
3. Finnish communication, where communication is understood in the widest possible sens, as behaviors interpreted by others.
4. Dividing lines in Finnish culture today: where does the national dimension break down and one segment of society differ noticeably from others?
5. Topics suggested by the participants.

2. How to pass the course

This course consists of 12 hours of lectures and exercises, and a written assignment.

2.1 Participation

The 12 hours are divided up into four meetings of three hours each. All four meetings must be attended, either in person or online. The lectures will be streamed live through Adobe Connect, and recordings will remain available on the course’s Moodle platform afterwards.

2.2 Written Assignment

The assignment is to serve two purposes:
- As a lecture journal, it should summarize the relevant information presented on each topic.
- As a work of comparative reflection, it will compare Finnish culture (as presented during the lectures) to the author’s (authors’) own national culture.

In cases where there is more than one student of the same nationality, students will work together to form pairs or groups of up to 4 students. Otherwise, students will work on the assignment alone. Where written in a group, all members will receive the same grade.

The assignment should
- be at least 10 pages long (not counting title page or references; standard font size 11),
- serve both as a lecture journal and as a discussion of cultural differences and similarities, making use of the topics, paradigms, and terminology introduced during the course,
- be handed in within 14 days of the final lecture.
