Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Nonprofit organizations quite often rely on “selfless” individual behavior: many people give donations or volunteer time and effort for different charitable causes. Such altruistic behavior provides a challenge to traditional economic theory. Additionally, many nonprofit organizations are partially funded from public sources. This seminar is geared towards a better understanding of the interactions between public and private funding of public goods and of the foundations of the nonprofit sector.

We will discuss recent literature from the field of behavioral and experimental economics to learn why people give and how donations can successfully be elicited. These studies on individual giving will be complemented by empirical evidence. Further, the seminar addresses interactions between for-profit and nonprofit firms – why, for example, do many for-profit firms make charitable donations. Finally, we discuss the link between public and private funding of public goods. One part is devoted to a critical discussion of charitable giving as it may allow few indivdiuals to decide what public goods are provided.

Lernziel:
The seminar will primarily draw from recent papers that have been published in leading economic journals. They include papers from public economics, experimental and behavioral economics and public finance.  You will learn theoretical foundations as well as be exposed to empirical evidence.

Vorgehen:
The first session of the seminar will take place Friday, November 6, 10-12. It will provide an overview of all topics and will let students choose their topic of interest. The remaining discussions and presentations will be blocked on January 22, 29,30, 2021.

In this seminar, students investigate an economic problem within a topic of their choice. A list of topics will be distributed.  Students write a paper (about 15 pages) investigating the problem and present their results in the seminar (approx. 30 minutes plus discussion). All participants are expected to have thoroughly read the relevant texts on the reading list for every session.

Your presentation must adhere to professional standards. You may use slides. It is expected that all students come prepared to the sessions and have read the relevant literature.

Topics should be based mainly on the papers provided to students and additional peer-reviewed literature. Your goal should be for your paper to go beyond a literature review and attempt to present an original idea or discussion. The topic of the paper has to be approved and registered by the instructors in advance.

Deadlines: A first (preliminary) version of the paper is due Dec 22, 2019. Following the seminar in January, students have the chance to revise their manuscript. The final version is due March 15, 2020. All submissions need to be send (pdf version) by email to all instructors. Please use your Universität Hamburg email account. Late submissions will not be accepted unless previously agreed upon with the instructors.

Literatur:
To be provided.

Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen:
Presentations and term papers must follow scientific standards. That is, they must provide proper references.
The paper can be written in Englisch (recommended) or German. Presentations are in English.
