Climate change, biodiversity loss, resource scarcity as well as social and economic inequalities present substantial challenges to the world community. In 2015, the United Nations has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals to transform our world as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. But what is Sustainable Development? What does Sustainable Development require in terms of the transformation of the economy and what can economics contribute to achieving this? This lecture will introduce students to the economics of sustainability and address the aforementioned questions in turn. In the course of this lecture, students will learn the conceptual basis of sustainability and how sustainability can be defined and operationalized in economic terms. They will be able to use economic methods, such as basic dynamic optimisation, to analyse various aspects of sustainability as well as discuss and evaluate different policy options. Students should develop an informed view on crucial sustainability debates from an economic perspective, such as how much society should invest in climate change mitigation, how to prevent overfishing or biodiversity loss as well as whether there are environmental limits to economics growth.
Vorgehen:
This course mainly follows an interactive lecture format. This is complemented by tutorials that apply economic methods in the form of problem sets or that feature discussions based on the pertinent literature.
Due to the Corona-Virus related contact restrictions that we expect to be in place throughout the winter semester, our course will be held online via ZOOM. We will still try to keep the course format as interactive as possible. There is no recording of lectures, but we will make all slides available after the meeting in due timeon STINE. Online office hour meetings (also via ZOOM) can be booked via e-mail. You find more information on this in the course material that we will upload in due time. We would like to stress that these restrictions make it even more valuable for you to get together in smaller groups of two or more students (online or in-person) to help each other by forming learning groups and giving each other feedback.
