Kommentare/ Inhalte: This module will explore how the relationship between literature and its social and physical environment is addressed in selected Indonesian and Malay texts. The main theme of this class is the sea, which is very present in the everyday life of many people, from fishermen to sea nomads. It can be a place of danger but also of freedom and adventure. It bears witness to historical changes in the balance of power, and it can symbolize the boundary between life and death. In this online course that will be held via Zoom we will look at the different ways in which the sea is conceptualized in the literature of the Malaysian-speaking world. Therefore, we will read a number of Indonesian and Malay cultural productions and selected secondary literature which will provide us with a conceptual basis to further appreciate and analyse the narratives. The teaching will consist of weekly online meetings consisting of an introduction to the week’s topic and the readings by the lecturer. This will be followed by a number of questions and assignments that the students are required to answer, discuss or carry out. Contact will be limited to virtual meetings and discussions; materials will be provided by the lecturers in a digital form. The weekly meetings will be led alternatively by Prof. van der Putten and Dr Arnez. A good understanding of spoken and written Indonesian is prerequisite. The module is open for MA and BA students. Prof. Jan van der Putten specializes in Malay manuscript studies and textual production and distribution issues. He has taught at the University of Hamburg for the past 6 years and before was attached to the National University of Singapore. His latest research projects deal with the production of Malay manuscripts in Palembang and the formation of identity in Riau.
