Kommentare/ Inhalte: We will look at important Western paradigms in studying traditional and modern China, such as the geographical approach (Ji Chaoding, William G. Skinner), the Needham question (still a popular topic in Chinese language history of science), environmental history (a relatively new topic), ethnicity (including new Qing history), discussions about China/Western Europe developmental divergence (Pomeranz as well as Peer Vries), and so on. The class will be taught in English.
