Kommentare/ Inhalte: This course is a practical introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related scientific applications using the widespread commercial GIS Software ArcGIS. Technical concepts comprise data structures and management as well as map projections and the art of cartographic visualization. First lessons will focus on vector data before raster data and combined analyses of raster and vector data will be discussed. The course makes use of various geodata sources, many of these accessible without charge, as starting point for spatial data analysis.
Lernziel: Participants learn about basic GIS concepts, how to create, access and manage geodata and obtain a comprehensive overview to vector and raster related tools and analyses. The course finishes with an assignment, which the participants have to solve by themselves.
Vorgehen: During the course a number of assignments will be given to the participants, which have to be worked out independently for a successful graduation. The level reached after a successful participation qualifies for the advanced courses GIS II and Remote Sensing & Image Analysis (dt. Fernerkundung).
