Kommentare/ Inhalte: In this course, we will study politics, society, and economics in rural Japan. Questions raised in the seminar include the following: What are the challenges Japan’s regions face today? Which actors do get involved in addressing these challenges, and which strategies do they apply? How can we evaluate the potential for innovation of Japan’s politics, society, and economics stemming from the nation’s regions? Students are encouraged, over the course of the semester, to research and present (orally and in written form) small case studies on this set of questions. Books on our reading list include the following: Assmann, Stephanie (2016, ed.): Sustainability in Contemporary Rural Japan: Challenges and Opportunities. London: Routledge. Hijino, Ken (2017): Local Politics and National Policy. Multi-level Conflicts in Japan and Beyond. London: Routledge. Reiher, Cornelia (2014): Lokale Identität und ländliche Revitalisierung. Die japanische Keramkistadt Arita und die Grenzen der Globalisierung. Bielefeld: Transcript.
