Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Fundamentals of numerical discretization; finite difference solutions of one-dimensional prototype equations; explicit and implicit time stepping; boundary condition; non-equidistant grid spacing; coupled systems of equations; effects of resolution; qualitative and quantitative comparison of different algorithms; reaction, diffusion and advection of tracers and momentum, wave propagation. Water column models. Theory and practical exercises.
formal requirements:
advanced knowledge in a programming language (FORTRAN, Matlab, Python or R).
recommended prerequisites:
basic knowledge in geophysical fluid dynamics

Lernziel:
Students are familiar with standard methods used in fluid dynamics; they are able to implement simple models of fundamental processes (reaction, diffusion, advection, wave propagation).
