Kommentare/ Inhalte:
This seminar is an introduction to the philosophical issues raised by film. We will begin by covering a range of topics in theoretical philosophy, including the question of what exactly film is and whether film is an art, before considering questions regarding how films depict fictitious events and who counts as the author of a film, given the various people who are collectively responsible for its creation. We will then cover a range of topics in practical philosophy, including the question of how we can be rational in responding emotionally to fiction films given that we know the events depicted are not real, and why people find it enjoyable to watch horror films despite the fact that such films elicit emotional and physiological responses that we normally try to avoid. In addition to preparing for the seminars by reading (and thinking about!) the weekly texts, students will also be required to watch a number of films that serve as test cases for the philosophical issues discussed in the course.
