Hegemony and Political Discourse Theory

INHALTE:

Hegemony is a central concept of political science, which has undergone a significant change of meaning over the years. One of the most influential conceptualizations of the term was presented by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe in their book “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy – Towards a Radical Democratic Practice.” Aiming to respond to a ‘theoretical crisis’ that they perceived in Marxist thought, Laclau & Mouffe built on and brought together the ideas of early Marxist thinkers, Antonio Gramsci, and post-structuralist theory to develop what has become one of the most influential theories of hegemony and discourse in the social sciences: Political Discourse Theory (PDT). By looking at the role that political discourses, contested political identities, and hegemonic practices play in the construction of our societies, Laclau & Mouffe’s work has opened up an area of enquiry that contributes to an understanding of current political developments in the international as well as the domestic arena. Accordingly it has been used to throw light on issues such as construction of political identities at the domestic and international level, constructions of world and regional order, regional (dis)integration studies, populist politics and political antagonisms in democratic societies.

The seminar centers on the foundational text “Hegemony and Socialist Strategy” but also provides insights into earlier conceptualizations of hegemony that the work builds on, Laclau’s later work, the application of the theory to specific case studies, and further elaborations of political discourse theory. Thereby, special attention is paid to the clarification of key concepts, Laclau & Mouffe’s intellectual influences, and to the already performed and potential applications of the theory to contemporary political phenomena. Through selected readings, case studies and discussions the students would interiorize, understand and reflect on the strengths and limits of the theory for the interpretation of contemporary political challenges.  Attention will also be paid to the ‘strategy’ aspect in the title of Laclau and Mouffe’s book, with the discussion centering on the relationship between the theory and practice of politics.

Lernziel:
This seminar introduces students to an important theoretical approach to analyzing social and political developments. In the course of the seminar students will learn how to understand, contextualize, critically reflect upon and apply political discourse theory to contemporary political challenges. In doing so they also gain a critical insight into the intellectual traditions of Marxism and Poststructuralism that the theory draws upon. Beyond this specific content of the seminar, students will also learn to reflect on issues of ontology and epistemology in social sciences and gain an understanding into what constitutes social and political theory, in the process also developing their own analytical stance.

Vorgehen:
The course is held in English language. It is carried out as a “block seminar” on three weekends at the following dates:
