Kommentare/ Inhalte: Traditionally, sociology is all about explaining the present with either describing the present or extrapolating from events or actions of the past. For some sociologists, these tools also serve to predict the future. However, it seems like sociology has recently (re-)discovered the future as a category of knowledge. Imaginairies of possible futures hereby say a lot about present interest and desires. In this seminar, we will explore different sociological perspectives on future(s), predictions, imaginaries of the future and practices of future-making.
Lernziel: Learning goals - Introduction to selected sociological theories on the sociology of the future - Understanding and discussion of socio-scientific texts as well as the classification of texts in the context of general sociological debates - Presentation skills - precise, factual and respectful reasoning in the seminar situation in English - Written elaboration of a specific question
Vorgehen: Procedure and examination performance The seminar is based on the discussion of the texts and thus requires thorough and critical reading as well as active participation. It starts with a short presentation (15-20 min), which should go beyond a mere reproduction of the texts, by referring to other sociological texts and developing discussion-related questions.
