Visual impressions of the world around us have fascinated many people for many centuries, first by drawings and paintings, and particularly photography and, since the turn of the 20th century, film. Moving pictures have since conquered the world and move billions of people to cinemas to enjoy the thrills of watching. Everyone knows the immense influence the American film industry has had on the medium, while many are also aware of the propaganda possibilities of the medium which perhaps in its most innocent form may enhance national identity of the home audience. We speak of national cinemas in which a tradition has been established that form the basis for young filmmakers to make their pieces of art.

This historical value of the film medium is also acknowledged by nations that increasingly archive old movies and try to restore these to their original form and quality so that they can be screened to an audience that may consider the movie as historical source material. Institutions such as The BFI (British Film Institute) National Archive in the UK and the DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum in Frankfurt are national institutions that connect the film industry with national interests and education. In Southeast Asia similar institutions have been established, e.g. Vietnam Film Institute in Hanoi and Asian Film Archive in Singapore, which try to stimulate a film culture and preserve the film heritage of the nations.

In the winter semester 2019-2020 we will screen six films made in different Southeast Asian nations and representing different interests of the directors and sponsors. The first two are silent movies that highly exoticise Southeast Asia as tropical paradise peopled by primitive creatures. The other four show significant nodes in the film history of the respective nations.

We invite students and other interested parties to attend the screenings but seats are limited as the screenings take place in the SLM Kino with 50 seats. These seats will be issued at a first come first served basis: Get your (free!) ticket now in Geschäftszimmer ESA O 231.

Attending at least four screenings and writing a 3-page response paper about one of the films in its historical context, may earn students two credit points (2 LP) apart from the experience of watching intensely interesting historical filmic documents!
