Kommentare/ Inhalte: The crisis of 2008 and the resulting impoverishment of ever more humans, not least across Western nations, has pushed critical research capitalism back onto the agenda of the social sciences and humanities. Despite capitalism’s rather long existence, social and cultural anthropologists “discovered” capitalism as a research theme only after 1945. Most ethnographies published since either seek to uncover and engage the structured being that capitalism imposes on humans, globally and locally, or they engage the ideological dimensions that undergird capitalist exploitation and in this focus on the ontological position of individuals within capitalist societies. The first four sessions of this module offer an overview of research on capitalism in anthropology since the 1950s. Further sessions each engage a recent ethnography that has an explicit focus on capitalism with topics such as Wall Street bankers, Indian subaltern socialists, Nepali garment industries, music in Congo, and Colombian trade unionists fighting US paramilitaries.
Lernziel: This module offers an overview of anthropological research on capitalism, past and present. The focus is on the development of advanced theoretical and empirical knowledge about the capitalist world system and its various bifurcations and vicissitudes.
Vorgehen: The first five sessions of this module will offer a mix of lectures and open debate, the following sessions will be student-led with individual or group presentations. It is expected that participants have good knowledge of academic work and are willing to engage in open debate in English language. Successful completion requires a presentation, moderation, and an extended, critical review of an ethnographic book (length is five-pages or more).
