Please note that the first lecture will be on 22nd of October
From Satellite Navigation and Google Maps to Contemporary art, maps are ubiquitous and popular in everyday life and galleries alike. The making of maps as representations and vehicles of topographic, cosmographic, cosmological, theological, historiographic and encyclopedic knowledge, as well as political and religious claims, however, has a very long history. The oldest surviving map is some 2.600 years old, and a large number of maps, and written evidence of many more, survive from the Middle Ages, particularly from the 12th century onwards. They were drawn and painted on parchment, cloth, paper and walls or woven and embroidered onto tapestries; they hung in monasteries and noblemen’s great halls or were taken on journeys; they were included in psalters, travel reports and encyclopedias; pilgrims even had them tattooed onto their skin.
While older scholarship often dismissed medieval maps as naïve and ‘incorrect’, medieval maps have more recently been appreciated as highly complex, multi-graphic and intertextual (or ‘inter-pictorial’) artefacts.
This lecture, held in English, gives an overview of the types of maps produced from Early Christian times to c. 1500. It explores how and by whom they were produced and used, and discusses scholarly theories and methods applied to them in recent scholarship.
Regular attendance is required for 2 ECP, while those aiming for 4 ECP will sit a written exam. More information will be given in the first session.
