Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Attempts to think about art history in global terms, over the past decade, have prompted a need to redefine strategic concepts. Among many other terms destabilized by their shifting meanings in differing contexts, ‘modernity’ and ‘modernism’ have come under renewed scrutiny. In parallel, the term ‘periphery’ figures increasingly in art historical discourses, transplanted from its once prevalent sociological usage, via the field of postcolonial studies. The present seminar will seek to address the relationship between ‘modernity’ and ‘periphery’ through the examination of artworks produced in Brazil during the period 1890 to 1945, reflecting upon issues of cultural transfer. Among the topics discussed will be: urban landscapes and the iconography of the first favelas; bohemianism, carnival and ‘pre-modernism’ in Rio de Janeiro; illustration, graphics and the new visual culture of the metropolis; the Modern Art Week of 1922 and tensions over regional and national identity; Antropofagia, ethnicity and the exotic in the context of primitivism. Teaching will be conducted in English.
