The Idea of Periphery: Revisiting Center-Periphery Perspectives

Synopsis
In view of the recurrent use of the term “periphery” to characterize the socioeconomic realities of Latin American societies, the seminar proposes to revisit some of the classic authors and perspectives that have used the center-periphery paradigm, one whose enduring relevance may still be noted in contemporary analysis such as those of Postcolonial studies, for example. This interdisciplinary course focuses on the theoretical developments around the concept of periphery as carried out by the original formulators of the Latin American structuralist school (Raul Prebisch, Celso Furtado), the main theorists of the Dependency Theory (Fernando Henrique Cardoso, André Gunder Frank, Theothônio dos Santos, Rui Mauro Marini, Theotônio dos Santos) and authors affiliated to the World-System Analysis (Immanuel Wallerstein, Giovanni Arrighi). The goal is to delimit the concept of periphery according to each author and each theoretical movement, making its use more accurate and allowing a debate with contemporary scholars that also refer to this idea.

Evaluation

• For students in Studienleistung (Modul or Wahlbereich):
The participation points are obtained through the writing of two résumés (2 pages each résumé). Each résumé should summarize one discussed text of free choice.
Deadline: last session.

• For students in Einzelprüfung:
Examination points will be attributed according to one of the following two options:
Option 1. Writing of one long essay (10-12 pages) addressing the a question discussed in during the seminar. Deadline: end of the semester.
Option 2. Writing of three short essays (4-5 pages each), each one dedicated to one of the three main parts of the seminar. Deadlines: each short essay is due one week after the conclusion of each part of the seminar.
All résumés, long and short essays can be written either in German, Portuguese, English, Spanish or French. The sessions will be held in English, but interventions in other common languages will not be discouraged.
