- The students are required to have a thorough knowledge of modern Indonesian or modern Malaysian.
- The module is continued in the Summer Semester with a study of Malay manuscripts in Arabic script.
Kommentare/ Inhalte:
In this module we will examine developments in the history of Malay writing by reading and discussing a selected number of primary and secondary texts. We will discuss different forms of texts and their contents, reflecting worldview, social context and function of the texts. The course also will comprise an introduction into the Arabic script (jawi) used in manuscripts and early printed works.
The students are required to have a thorough knowledge of modern Indonesian or modern Malaysian.
The module is continued in the Summer Semester with a study of Malay manuscripts in Arabic script.
Course requirements and assessment:
- Attendance and active class participation: the student is required to prepare the assigned texts and discuss them in class. (20%)
- A translation of a short traditional Malay text (30%).
- A Jawi test: transliteration of a short text from jawi to rumi (10%)
- Final examination. (40%)
