Kommentare/ Inhalte: This book-seminar is intended to give the students a comprehensive and contemporary overview of the debates surrounding the many worlds of human rights. We will read and discuss articles covering the state-of-art in the theory of human rights from Adam Etinson's edited collection of the same title.
Lernziel: The seminar aims to give participating students a good critical understanding of core debates in the theory of human rights. A successful completion of the course should enable the students to analyze and evaluate the approaches to understanding human rights and also to offer their views on them.
Vorgehen: This is a text-based seminar. Students are required to come prepared to each session. This includes a careful reading of the assigned text for each session and some time for critical reflection on the arguments discussed in the text. All participants are expected to send a question or a critical remark on the text for each session at least 6-hours before each seminar session to nawaz.brohi@uni-hamburg.de (they are required to do this at the very least 7 times during the semester). Each session kicks off with a 20 to 30-minute student presentation that serves to kontexualise the text and start a discussion on its argument. All participants are expected to give a presentation, either individually or in a group, at least once during the semester. Students are encouraged to use to secondary literature in preparing their presentations. Successful completion of the course also requires handing in a 5000-word Essay (ca. 15 pages) on any of the themes discussed in the seminar.

A) Studienleistungen (unbenotet):
Students are expected to actively participate in seminar discussions. They are required to read and engage with the assigned texts through presentations (to be held at least once during the semester) and questions or critical remarks (to be submitted per email to nawaz.brohi@uni-hamburg.de at least 7 times during the semester before 10am on seminar days). Although these activities are not going to be marked but they, importantly, serve as requirements for the exam and a successful completeion of the course (Prüfungsvoraussetzung gem. FSB zu § 13)
