International Relations Theory
INHALTE:
This class addresses the main theoretical developments in the discipline of IR theory. IR theory is a relatively young discipline with origins in the 20th century. As such IR theory is characterised by ongoing and plural theory-building which is notably interdisciplinary and contingent. This interdisciplinary frame includes roots in the disciplines of political science, international law, sociology and history among others. It is also marked by notably regional differences. The class will (1) address the stages of theory-building embedded in distinct regional and historical contexts, (2) identify core concepts of theory-building, (3) compare different approaches such as realism, liberalism, constructivism, post-structuralism, critical theory, feminist theory and post-colonial theories, and (4) identify core concepts, methodologies and methods. Against this background, the class will critically discuss leading de-bates, paradigm changes and current challenges of IR theory in light of large historical changes, critical junctures and future challenges within the wider context of world politics. The class is taught based on the concept of problem-based learning (PBL). It aims to prepare students to write their BA dissertations in the field of IR theory.
Vorgehen:
This class applies problem-based learning (PBL). The outcome will be students’ BA dissertation proposals or research essays. The first half puts an emphasis on acquiring knowledge and critically engaging with leading IR theory; the second half centres – but does not exclusively target - more explorative and empirical research projects. PBL stresses collective and interactive learning, and project related work inside and outside the classroom. Stu-dents will continue to work in small groups, in direct discussion with the professor, or in interactive in-class discussions which include lectures, student presentations, group work, critical discussion and round-table debates. The teaching and learning tools include work with PPTs, audio-video material, the IT and common library research. In the first part of the semester selected literature will intensively discussed.

B) Modulprüfung:
Prüfungsart: The type of exam usually consists of a research essay or a research proposal in view of students’ BA theses, each comprising 15-20 pp (max) plus a list of references. The essay may be co-authored. In that case, 5 pp (per additional author) must be added. The final exam type, however, will be agreed upon with the lecturer after a joint discussion in class at the start of the semester.
